It's been a little while

November just swept past us! We have been quite busy with the holidays and school and work and children...etc. Lincoln is doing well. We are nearly done potty training. He wears big boy underpants nearly all the time now, except at night when he wears pull ups.

Lenore is 6.5 months and she can clap as of yesterday. She is also getting very close to crawling. She gets up on her hands and knees and rocks back and forth. There is a video of this, which I will link at the bottom of this post. But first, here is a video from a while ago of Lenny "talking" to us.

Lenny Babble from Lucas Harrison-Zdenek on Vimeo.

We are getting close to another Christmas season and Lincoln has already visited Santa to ask for his toys. Lenore kinda hates Santa. She began crying the second I handed her over to him, but, in her defense, this year's Santa kinda looked homeless...so yeah.

Here is a link to a video of Lenny sitting. We were at a roller derby practice, in case you are wondering what all the noise is...

I also stumbled across an old video of Lincoln from about a year ago. It's pretty cute so check it out!

Lincoln is 3 years old tomorrow!

Lincoln turns 3 on Sunday. Poppa and Auntie came to visit and brought gifts tonight. Among other things, he got 3 new masks: Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man. He also got a foam Thor hammer. He then spent the rest of the evening smashing me with the hammer and throwing it across the livingroom yelling "Avengers, assemble!"

Here are a few pictures:

Then and now

I was recently going through some scans of pictures of my father when he was a little boy. It is somewhat surprising to me just how much Lincoln looks like my dad used to. I'll add some pictures for comparison and you will barely be able to tell them apart. It's uncanny. I always thought I looked a lot like my father when he was a boy and even now, as a man, I feel that I got my mother's nose and the rest of my face is Zdenek.

If I can get the side-by-side to work, here is a comparison:

They are looking in different directions, but that is basically the same kid! Here's another one:

I'm blowing my own mind just doing this comparison! It is awesome how genes work to replicate our likeness. If I can get my hands on some of my little boy pictures I'll post them as well. I was always told that Zdenek boys all look the same, but I never believed it until I had a son.

That's all for now. To see a few more pictures of my dad when he was a boy go HERE

I feel like this used to be easier

I'm not sure why I let whole months slip away without a single new post, but it happens more frequently now then it ever has.

Lenore will be 5 months on the first. We gave her a bit of cereal a few days ago for the first time, and while her tongue seems to get in the way of her getting the food in her mouth, she is pretty good at eating solid food already. It is hard to believe that November 18th she'll be 6 months old. With Link, everything was an event so it all seems like it took forever and I think the following may be why:

(This story is a bit convoluted. For this, I apologize. There is a point, however. You must trust that I will get to it eventually! To skip the whole thing, just look for the double asterisk **)

**I listen to a radio show on my local NPR station called Wiretap. The show is broadcast from somewhere in Canada near the New York border, but that isn't really too important apart from the close proximity to the states. The show is about a man named Jonathan Goldstein and the premise is mostly that he records his conversations. These conversations occur both in person and over the phone with his friends and family (usually somewhat scripted), or with other interesting, weird or funny people he finds (most often legitimate). There is also a theme to each broadcast. One such episode had to do with the passage of time and our relationship with it. In this episode, Jonathan speaks with a man who, in 2011, took it upon himself to attempt to slow down his perception of the passage of time.

The story begins like this: the guest, Matt Danzico, has decided to create an experiment for the period of one year to attempt to slow his own perception of time. The project is called The Time Hack. He got the idea from a study that a researcher named David M. Eagleman (information about Eagleman and human time perception study here), who's hypothesis is that when we experience something new, our brain record lots of extra information which, upon being recalled, is slowed down to adequately process. This makes the event seem to take somewhat longer than it actually did, therefore manipulating time within our own consciousness. Danzico then goes on to explain that his project puts him into a new experience every day for 365 days so that he may be able to experience this time dilation effect first hand.

**My conclusion, therefore, is that being a new parent and having some sort of new baby experience every day with Lincoln caused our brains to record time differently than it does now that we are more experienced. This is why we feel as though Link grew up so slowly, while time with Lenore seems to be flying by.

So, with all that said, we are all doing well. Lenny is getting bigger all the time. She can roll back and forth now and she has been showing signs that she wants to crawl for a while. She hasn't popped any teeth yet, but she is constantly gnawing on herself and anything else she can get in her mouth.

Link is also progressing well. He has a huge vocabulary now. He speaks like a kid 2-3 years older than he is. He sings a lot of songs now as well. He knows nursery rhymes and we read Shel Silverstein poetry as well as other books before bed and before his nap every day. Gena got him into a program that Dolly Parton sponsors which sends him a new book every month until he turns 5. So far, we have received about 5 or 6 books in the mail and Lincoln loves them all.

Finally, I posted a few new pictures to the Picasa account. The slideshow on the right of this blog has all the new pictures. I posted many that Gena took with her phone from over the summer. There are a few from our trip to my family cabin, a few from our trip to Oscoda in August and then random others from swimming and playing outside. The album is almost all new pictures now. The old ones can still be found in the Archive album.

I have a lot happening between school, work, the kids and the house, and my other projects for this fall, but you can be sure that there will be plenty more pictures coming soon. Link turns 3 on the 21st of this month and then there is Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas to cover. Plenty to post about for sure!

Vacation!!

I guess I should say "Staycation". We weren't able to go on a real vacation this year since Lenny is a bit young to travel. Instead, we took a week off and stayed home to just relax and enjoy what is left of summer.

We didn't just hang out at the house the whole time though. First we visited my dad's cabin on Lake Wixom for a couple of days. I went water skiing for the first time in nearly a decade and Lincoln tried tubing for the very first time...and hated it.

Gena also went tubing for the first time ever and ended up drinking half the lake from all the wipeouts. She attempted to get up on skis but had no success this time. We will get her up for sure next summer when we have more time up there.

The rest of the week we just kind of laid back at home. I went swimming with Link and we rode the bicycle a few times. Saturday I got to feel like a kid in a candy store on my first visit to Eastern Market. For those who are not familiar with this market, it is the largest farmer's market in the Detroit area. There are 3 large indoor pavilions set up where local and non-local farmers sell tons and tons of veggies every Saturday. There are also food vendors selling soups, breads, sandwiches, pies, home-baked goods and other things. Needless to say, I'm in love with this place.

We picked up some burritos from our favorite mexican food truck while there as well as some yummy gazpacho soup and came home for lunch. After we ate, the whole family took a nap and then Lincoln and I went for a bike ride. All in all, a pretty awesome end to my vacation.

Quick update

I know I'm behind. I know I need to post more pictures of the girl as well as the boy. I also know that I have a million things to tell everyone.

I don't have enough time at the moment to fulfill all of that. What I can do is say that everyone is healthy. We are all very busy enjoying the summer. The baby is getting big. She will be 3 months old soon and we are planning on getting some family pictures taken soon, so look for those.

In the meantime, I am uploading some new images to the slideshow album at the right of this page. They can also be viewed HERE.

Finally for tonight...Lenore will soon see the lake for the first time. I will be sure to take plenty of pictures when we go and I will also provide a more detailed update when I am able.

Awww...shoot!

I totally forgot the mention 4th of July!

I don't know where my mind is sometimes. So we had a crazy hot fourth. The day started out as a blazer and stayed that way for most of the afternoon. We ran some errands and visited Gena's mom and then on our way home, we stopped to get some buns for hotdogs and hamburgers for a little get-together that our friends were having.

The sky turned very dark while were at Kroger, so we headed home and waited to see what was going to happen. Of course we got a huge rain storm on the day of the year you are supposed to have all sorts of dangerous fun outside. But this was no ordinary rainstorm. I think that because it hadn't rained in so long, the air and the clouds were just overloaded because it rained harder than I have ever seen it rain. But that was just the beginning...

Soon after the rain started, I noticed something bouncing off the sidewalks. I couldn't be sure at first, since it was SOOO hot still, but I thought it was hail. I got my answer within minutes because the first few bits melted almost instantly and then it got bigger...and bigger...and BIGGER. Here is a picture of the last couple we risked our lives to collect:

From At Home With Little Ones

Never in my life have I seen hail half the size of a golf ball. This was amazing. Of course, it was probably better in Lincoln's eyes since my mind immediately turned to "Will my windshields crack? How will my garden fare? Is my siding going to get destroyed? Glad I have a new roof...etc." Being an adult sure takes a lot of the wonder and magic out of life.

P.S. There was no serious damage from the hail. The high winds blew my tomatoes over, but the plants are still alive and fruiting. There are some serious holes in my cucumber leaves, but even they are starting to come back. The worst thing to happen was the multiple indentations left in the car hoods and roofs, but that is only minor superficial stuff that doesn't really matter. Thank goodness.

Another whole month...GONE!

I cannot believe that Lenore will be 8 weeks old tomorrow. It doesn't seem possible. Of course, her actual 2 month birthdate is the 18th, but it is still pretty unbelievable that it has been so long since we brought her home.

Our routine seems to be pretty stable now, although Lincoln still has several micro-meltdowns anytime mommy leaves. Yesterday I told him that I would play with him in the yard with the squirt guns and he said "I don't want to play with you. I'll play with mommy when she comes home." Ouch...

We got a pool from Gena's mom and Rodger and we set it up in place of the one we bought. I spent about 3 hours yesterday cleaning it and filling it. The nice part about the new one is that it is large enough to have a filter and pump system attached which means I can chlorinate the water as well. I'm originally from an area where city water was an option to having a well, so there was never any discussion about water bills and how to keep them from breaking the bank. Now that I own a home in a metro area, I feel a bit anxious anytime the faucet is running! With the smaller pool, we would be putting about 50-60 gallons in, letting Lincoln play for a few hours and then dumping it. The new pool probably holds more like 150-160 gallons, but it will stay up until mid-September. Now the only thing that is bugging me is the non-eco-friendliness of simply draining that water instead of repurposing it for plants or grass. I'll have to look up ways to make it work out.

I'm not sure that there is much more to be said as of now. I am working whenever I can to get the kid's toy room set up. We picked up a very large train table from one of my coworkers and once everything is painted and finished, it will go into the room for Lincoln to play trains. I'll take pictures and post them when it's complete.

I'll also put any new images up on the slideshow gallery in the right sidebar. Enjoy!

One month has passed like a breeze!

Lenore was 4 weeks old as of 4:27pm yesterday. How quickly a month can pass! She left the hospital at a weight of 6lbs 8oz and her last doctor appointment set her at 7lbs 9oz. That was approximately a week and a half ago, so who knows how many more ounces she has packed on since then. Her skin is clearing up pretty well and she is getting to a point where she isn't just fussing or pooping or sleeping all the time, but actually looks at us and makes little noises.

She also smiles, like constantly. Lincoln didn't really smile all that much when he was tiny, but this girl is all about the smiles.

Finally, I posted new pictures from the baptism in their own album. To see random pictures from around the house and daily life, simply click on the slideshow at the right side of this page.

One more note

I have been working diligently on fixing the issues with the images from older posts that got messed up when I imported the older blog entries. I am finding that this is a bit more time consuming than I can be bothered with for now. Instead, I am going to remove those image links from the posts one at a time, as I have time to do so, and replace the whole mess with a series of links in a new post soon. This new series of links will allow anyone reading the blog to access all of the images I have posted.

If there is something specific you are looking for, I can make that available upon request, but from now on, everything should work properly.

Things are going swimmingly...pun intended

We bought a family size inflatable pool in the spring and I finally got it set up yesterday. Lincoln loves it. I could barely get him to get out when his little body was shaking from the cold.

Lenore was baptized on Sunday, June 3rd. It was a beautiful event thanks to our families. Aunt Pam made a beautiful gown for Lenny and she also was very helpful in taking lots of pictures. Gena's family made the long trip up to the church as well. After the ceremony, we all went for lunch at a local diner. All in all a wonderful day just like Lincoln's. I'm uploading the pictures tonight.

Father's day is coming up so I'll wish everyone (including myself) a very happy Father's day on Sunday. My family surprised me early with a brand new wheelbarrow! Thank you so much guys and girls!

Daddy pictures and corrections

One of my co-workers brought to my attention that a few of the links to images didn't translate properly when I imported the blog file. I am working diligently to correct the issues, but in the meantime, the links are still valid and active. In the event you come across an image embedded within an entry and it is black with a grey "NO" sign inside, simply click the box and you will be taken to the picture.

I am uploading a few new pictures to the slideshow at the right. I had Gena take these with me and Link and Lenny so that I could shave my silly "new dad" moustache off. Well, I should say that I love the moustache, but that some people don't appreciate the etymology and history of such an artful growth of hair...so here are the few pictures of me with my awesome handlebar beauty:

Our first full day home

Aside from getting no sleep last night, it has been great being home with our new little addition. I normally hate little cutesy phrases like that, but when you have a new baby, you tend to get kind of sappy.

She is the most lovely little girl I've ever seen. She and her brother are getting along great. Lincoln just loves her. When she cries, he touches her head and says "It's ok, I'm here." Or "don't cry little buddy."

I posted 2 new albums to the Picasa. Soon I'm going to learn how to post 2 pictures side by side to compare the 2 of them from their first pictures. They look similar, but not identical. It's been kind of fun going through old pictures.

The two new albums:

Visitors!
Finally, I added another album with a slideshow to the right of this page. This will replace the old album of Lincoln's new pictures. There are plenty of new pictures coming as well.

A New Way to Blog

With our new little addition to the family, I decided to give our family blog a little facelift. Obviously it isn't just little Lincoln anymore, so we are up to date with a Lenore as well.

Lincoln is the happiest, most loving big brother we could ask for. When he came up to visit yesterday, all he wanted to do was touch Lenore's face and kiss her and hold her. We sat and watched Adventure Time with little sister. It was pretty much the best thing I've ever seen.

Baby got her first bath last night around 10. She is eating very well and sleeps pretty soundly so far too. I know it won't last, so we are going to try to take advantage of it and get some shut-eye as well.

Mommy is eating right now, which is very good. She is feeling much better now that the pain killer is wearing off and she isn't nauseated every 10 minutes.

Finally, I added a new album in Picasa which will be followed shortly by another. The first is birthday pictures and the next will be leaving day pictures. After that, I'll add an album for pictures of the kids and family shots as well. Here's a link to and image from the first:

Happy birthday little girl!

Welcome Lenore!

Happy Belated Mother's Day

I know, I know...I'm late.

I didn't forget though. We are so anxiously awaiting this new child, that I didn't have to time to update.

SOOO...Happy Mother's Day! a few days late....

From

Lincoln made mommy a card and we brought her breakfast in bed. Hope you all had a great day as well.

One quick final note: I added some newer pictures to the iPhone album, which can be seen in here---->

Also, we had a midwife appointment yesterday and everything is going well. This baby should come soon, but we have until next Wednesday, a week from today, just in case it decides to take its time. Our due date was the 9th and they let you go 2 weeks past before you have to either induce or schedule a c-section. We are hoping for natural this time.

Ooops

again... I let another month go by without posting? How?! I have so much to catch up on!

Gena is coming along perfectly with the next addition to our family unit. We are due in two days, but she could really go any time now since she is already having some intermittent contractions. It's pretty much just a waiting game now.

I am nearly done painting our bedroom in anticipation for the little one. After I finish (hopefully tomorrow) I have to build the new crib and then we are all set...I guess. I mean, I still have a garden to finish building and plant, a lawn to finish tending to, a fence to finish building, a playroom to paint and assemble, a pantry that should have been done 6 months ago...the list goes on! If I can get our room finished and put back together in the next day or two, I will be more than happy with the progress we've made.

Finally, Lincoln is excited to be a brother. He thinks it is a girl for sure. We are still unsure about what it will be, but either way, it's the last one so it isn't as if it is really all that important. Either way we will love it and our family will be complete. Although, we still haven't quite decided on a boy name yet, so if it isn't a girl, it may remain nameless for a bit.

We spent most of the day cleaning and painting today. It's that whole nesting instinct you get into when the baby is almost here I guess. Lincoln still has some work to do on cleaning up his room, but that may never get done. I guess I could probably assemble the new swing we bought tonight, just in case. Last night I installed the second carseat and now we have no room to take any passengers anywhere with us every again!

I will not be updating live like I did with the last birth. I will have my computer with me through the entire thing, but I will most likely post a very brief update after the baby is born and leave the rest of the blog work for after we get home and I have some time off to do it. Wish us luck in the next week or so. Hopefully it will be less than that!

More video

Here's another one for you to watch. He's "helping" me do Wii fit exercises. We are doing the karate workout. I think he is doing a better job than I am at following the little guys on the television. This was taken a while ago...

He's a Maniac, Maniac on the...Couch??

Gena has recently been getting Lincoln into music. She plays a song or music video on her computer for him and then talks to him about the music or the band. He will often comment on the singer's hair or the way the music sounds. He even tells us if he thinks the song is good or bad. Here is a clip of Lincoln dancing to the song "Sexy and I Know It" by LMFAO. It's pretty hilarious...

Little Changes

I'm making some little changes around this blog soon. With a new kiddo on the way, rather than start another blog and worry about not keeping up with two, I'm reorganizing this blog to accommodate our growing family.

I'm still considering a redesign of the layout, but for now the only major changes are the title and, eventually the web address. I will announce more soon, after I find a good way to transition without confusing everyone.

In the meantime, we have been enjoying the beautiful weather the past couple of days by playing outside a lot and getting some of the outside projects ready. Our primary flower garden under our big front window is now ready to be planted and we have a bunch of really nice perennials to put in there. in addition to the flowers we have purchased, the guys who did our renovations before we moved in just planted 3 leafy Hosta plants right next to our back door. They have always been in a bad spot so I am going to transplant them this season.

The garden will also be expanding this year with 2 new beds as well as a new plan. I have been reading a lot about this technique called "square foot gardening" and this year I'm going to dive right into it. It looks like it may work perfectly for the size and location of my garden, since it is designed for small urban areas to make the most of your space with as little maintenance as possible.

We just took a tour of Henry Ford West Bloomfield last night and we are both amazed at how nice it is. Of course, being somewhat new and also being built in a very affluent area helps. The hospital has everything from a beauty salon to a huge cafeteria to a store that carries all sorts of natural products instead of the standard junky stuffed animals and dying bunches of flowers.

The labor and delivery floor has private rooms for every mother-to-be, jacuzzi tub in every room, a 32" television with internet access built in, a mini fridge so you don't have to go down the hall to get your personal food and drinks...as well as a bunch of other awesome modern amenities.

We are keeping our fingers crossed now, hoping that everything goes more smoothly the second time around!

I'm in trouble...

I just realized that I have neglected the blog for over 2 months! Oh what ever am I to do??

So a few updates on what has happened since Christmas:

Lincoln speaks like a kid now. It's mostly cute unless he is telling me that he doesn't like me or screaming NO at me. He has a vocabulary of more words than I can even count now and every day he learns new ones.

We are on our way to getting potty trained, although I doubt we will get it completed before baby #2 gets here. He has a fancy new little boy potty and he tells us when he has to go pretty much every time, but we don't always make it to the potty on time. He's getting there though.

We have been working on small jobs around the house to get ready for the new kiddo. We got a new crib after a debacle with our old one. As it turns out, dropside cribs are illegal to sell, even on craigslist. Apparently the federal government felt that it was ok for my kid to sleep in it, but it's too dangerous for everyone else's children. What a load of junk! So we trashed the old one and got a nice new one from Ikea. We are planning on keeping this one in our room until we figure out the sleeping habits and then we will make arrangements accordingly.

Lincoln has been sleeping in his own room in a big boy bed since the end of January. We haven't completely finished the paint job in there yet, but it is nice to have him out of our room finally.

About the same time he moved into his room he also made the decision to get rid of his pacifiers. We gave them to the Pacifier fairy and she took them to the little babies that need them more. He was well compensated for his sacrifice with a power ranger action figure and a few Hot Wheels cars. We haven't had an issue since the night he gave it up, which is what Gena and I had feared might happen. We weren't interested in a relapse and we got lucky this time.

Here are a couple of the pictures of him in his new room. Once we get the paint job done, we have shelves and pictures to hang on the walls and then it will truly be a kid's room.
